Health and safety: raising the bar

MCC is a US Government agency which invests in poor countries through grants - compacts - awarded to countries that demonstrate good governance, investment in people and economic freedom.

Occupational health and safety a very important issue.

In planning their investments ESIAs and H&S assessments are increasingly undertaken.

Three pronged approach:

• Policy level within agency
• Project level as part of compact both lead institution and sub-contractors (and consultants)
• MCC Staff

ESIA/ESMP includes H&S considerations, which flows into bidding/contract documents, and then onto site regulations and procedures.

MCC hopes to continue to encourage inclusion of H&S issues in impact assessments in a way that helps to meet occupational health standards alongside environmental and social standards.
